AD Achieves Record Sales and Net Distributions In First Six Months of 2023

AD is reporting that member sales in the first six months of 2023 reached a new record of $37.8 billion, an increase of 5% across 14 divisions and three countries. Purchases by member companies from AD suppliers reached $9.7 billion. Net distributions to members grew 5% to a record $673.9 million. AD member same-store sales grew 8% through the first six months of 2023. Same-store sales in the U.S. were up 9%, while those for companies headquartered in Canada and Mexico were up 5% in CAD and 7% in MXN, respectively.

The city of Markham, in collaboration with Alectra, Enbridge, Government of Canada, Lazlo Energy Services and Toronto Metropolitan University, recently completed a ten-home pilot project to test new technologies and strategies to reduce green house gas emissions. The pilot project was presented as part of EDA’s annual EDIST event put on at the end of May. The three-day event puts a major emphasis on education and sharing best practices.

The federal and provincial governments and industry organizations have been investing money and putting in work to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the construction industry, although more is needed to fully establish the trades as a viable career path for women as well as other equity deserving groups that are under-represented. Electrical in particular is hitting a point where there is growing demand for good workers, which could lead to a labour shortage if we are unable to grow the trade as people retire and demand for labour increases. We spoke to Reva Bond, Dean for SAIT’s School of Construction about women in trades, the apprenticeship model, meeting labour demand, and the importance of collaboration between industry stakeholders.

FLO and Nissan Canada are making EV charging more convenient with two initiatives — complimentary FLO charging credits and greater access to FLO’s residential EV chargers across Canada for new car buyers. The programs will give $150 worth of charging credits to Nissan Canada customers who purchase or lease one of their new EV’s along with the EV Care protection package. Humber Students Take Home Gold at Skills Ontario Competition in Mechatronics

Skills Ontario recently held the 2023 Skills Ontario Competition in person at the Toronto Congress Centre. It was the first in-person event after three years of it being held virtually during the COVID pandemic. To compete in the Skills Ontario Competition, students must register through their institution. Some institutions host their own internal competition to determine who will be selected to represent them. In the Mechatronics Contest, for example, students from Humber College compete against each other to determine who advances on to the Provincial Competition.

Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the wholesale trade sector for April. The advance results for April indicate that wholesale sales rose 1.6%. The increase reflects higher sales in the petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons subsector. This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 42.6%. The average final response rate to the survey over the 12 months preceding it was 82.1%.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) was essentially unchanged in March, following a 0.1% increase in February. Service-producing industries (+0.0%) were flat, whereas goods-producing industries (-0.1%) edged down. Overall, 12 of 20 industrial sectors posted increases in March. Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction increased 1.2% in March, marking a third consecutive monthly gain, and all subsectors contributed to the growth.
