Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the wholesale trade sector for July. The advance results for July indicate that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, other hydrocarbons and oilseed and grain) rose 1.4%. The increase reflects higher sales in the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector and the building material and supplies subsector.

IBEW: Bill C-50 Creates ‘Blueprint’ for Worker-Led Energy Transition

The IBEW is one of many Canadian labour unions supporting the Sustainable Jobs Act, which was tabled in Parliament on June 15 by Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. Known as Bill C-50, the legislation would provide job training to workers, many of them skilled tradespeople, for the transition to a low-carbon economy. Canada is the sixth-largest natural gas producing country in the world but plans to reduce emissions by 40% to 45% by 2030 and be nearly carbon-free by 2050.

Manufacturing sales decreased 1.7% to $71.5 billion in June, on widespread declines over 14 of 21 subsectors, led by the petroleum and coal product (-8.3%), chemical (-6.5%), and machinery (-5.5%) subsectors. Sales of motor vehicles increased the most, rising 11.4% to $5.6 billion in June. On a quarterly basis, total sales fell 0.8% in the second quarter of 2023, mainly on lower sales in the petroleum and coal product (-8.1%) and primary metal (-8.9%) subsectors. Year over year, total sales decreased 1.4% in June.
