Standards Council Invest $1 million to Send Canadians Overseas

Standards Council

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is investing over $1 million in 2014-2015 to send Canadian experts to attend international committee meetings with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

It’s an important initiative, SCC said, especially as the global economy continues to rely on standards and conformity assessment. “It is estimated that 80 percent of world trade is now impacted by standardization and conformity assessment,” SCC said. “By attending these international meetings, Canadian representatives can influence international standards development in a way that benefits Canadian business and, [with] access to the latest innovative technologies, sharpens Canada’s competitive edge.”

To that end, SCC has doubled its overall investment in Canadian standardization expertise at the international level over the last few years. They’ve also reached out to Canadian industry, government and consumer stakeholders on the benefits and importance of participation, and have received over $160,000 to help fund the participation of volunteers.
