How AI Can Transform HR for Electrical Distributors

How AI Can Transform HR for Electrical Distributors

March 17, 2026

By David Gordon, President, Channel Marketing Group

For electrical distributors, their largest asset, and greatest differentiator, is their people. While inventory is a large line-item expense, the reality is that you can operate a electrical distributorship with little, if any, inventory if that is your business model. But without people, you are a headless entity and only a technology platform (I know, some think we’ll get there with Agentic AI!) The opportunity exists for electrical distributors to use artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline, and enhance, their HR workflows.

HR Challenges for Electrical Distributors

But, at the same time, people administration is a distribution leader’s biggest frustration. While people are valued and perform, administration of “people issues” is a headache.

Everything from onboarding to training to healthcare / benefit administration to performance reviews and then think of attendance, sick / PTO tracking, safety issues, training requirements, government filings … need I go on?

And then we have people training for managers (I know, I can hear what you are saying about me reiterating challenges!)

Countless clients have confided about their “challenges” with their HR departments. With some I’ve helped them re-envision elements of it to be People, Performance, Management. This is a leadership culture issue. (As an aside, I’ve been involved in organizational development for many years and ran an Internal Motivation / Organizational Development practice for a performance management company before my journey into supporting distributors and even ran a global conference for YPO!)

Much gets, or should be, invested into HR … to support your largest asset. At the same time, elements of the process can be automated / systematized. And this means that AI can get involved.

For our AI eBook, The AI-Enabled Distributor, (available for $39), we thought of how AI can be used in many, perhaps all areas of an electrical distributorship … including HR.

Trace Sponenberg - HR

To support this I reached out to, Tracie Sponenberg, Founder & Chief People Officer of Tracie Sponenberg LLC. While Tracie consults with distributors, she once worked for a distributor. She spent almost 9 years at The Granite Group, a 55-year-old New England HVAC distributor with more than 65 locations … and lots of people.

Tracie wrote a chapter in The AI-Enabled Distributor eBook on how AI can support an HR department.

She also shared some AI resources that companies are using. Some she is personally familiar with; some she knows people using. And I trust Tracie.

Tools Electrical Distributors Can Use for HR

So, for an area of your business that you may not have thought about AI, consider having your HR team (or whoever HR reports to in your company if you “question” the willingness of HR to transform) do some research and consider how AI can better support your largest asset (and the comments about the companies are Tracie’s:

  • YourCo – This company was born out of a need to really change how we communicate with deskless workers.  And they are doing it!
  • MyWorkChoice – They have a really unique approach to workforce planning / scheduling.
  • WorkStory – It’s the best, simplest, AI-powered performance review and feedback platform I’ve seen.
  • Pyn – They have an easy-to-use AI powered employee experience platform that is unlike anything I’ve seen.
  • Harriet – AI chatbot for employee questions
  • Select Software Reviews (SSR) – free tool to help you find the right HRIS for your needs

There are hundreds of tools – these are just a few (and she mentions some others on her website.)  But hopefully this helps!

And if you are a manufacturer or a rep, these tools can help you too.

Getting Started. Your Next Step Toward AI-Enabled HR

While distributors may ask where to start with AI, HR may be a good starting point. Each of these tools are accessible and affordable … and can be started as a pilot and scaled. Consider starting with one tool and then building from there.

And for a comprehensive AI framework, The AI-Enabled Distributor eBook is available for only $39 and shares information on many other service providers, insights on getting started, data, governance policies, evaluating suppliers, conducting a pilot and more.

The low cost of the book was made possible by the support from these service providers, all of whom have AI-powered tools to support distributors, enabling distributors to generate productivity gains, sales efficiencies, and be more profitable – Band, Blue Ridge, Canals, Distributor Data Solutions, DISTRO, IDEA, Infor, Motivate, Mydatamatcher, Parpsec, Patchworks, Prokeep and Pull Logic.

AD IESD members can receive the book for free by contacting AD’s marketing department.
