Looking Ahead with Ian Rand, President Southwire Canada
November 24, 2025
Recently, Canadian Electrical Wholesaler had the opportunity to sit down with Ian Rand, who took the helm at Southwire Canada this April. Ian has worked in the industry for over 30 years and brings a substantial amount of knowledge and passion to a company already steeped in those traits.
We asked Ian to reflect on his years in the industry and what he plans to bring to Southwire from his experiences. Ian was more than happy to share what his career has taught him about the business and how he can best serve Southwire.
“I think a big part of the value I bring is an understanding that businesses go through good and bad times, and I have seen this cycle many times over my 30 years. It seems like every five or six years, we see some form of disruption or simply put, a tough year, but it is through those times that you learn to deal with the ups and downs.”

“What I really bring is stability, born from experience, that helps us recognize when things are not great, but also gives us the confidence to push through. It is in those moments that you need to thrive, build relationships, and serve customers.”
Ian also spoke about the importance of relationships, both personally and for Southwire. “For me, relationships are key throughout. Positions may change, but relationships endure. After 30 years, I have strong connections that provide stability and insight into areas that need growth, new ventures to explore, and a deep understanding of products.”
Recognizing that Ian has experienced many industry cycles over the years, we asked if he planned to use any previous tactics or understanding to tackle some of the current issues the market is facing today. Ian shared, “I believe Canada’s economy will strengthen. It is not a time to panic; it is a time to focus on your business and do what you do best. Southwire is a great company. It is innovative and constantly reinvesting in itself. While many others just have products, we have a level of innovation that continues to drive us forward regardless of the challenges we may face.”
The conversation also touched on broader market dynamics and the complexity they create for Canadian businesses. Ian emphasized the importance of staying focused on core strengths and working collaboratively across the industry to navigate these challenges and maintain a strong, competitive environment.
We then turned to some of the great things that led Ian to accept the role and his plans for leadership. Ian shared, “That is a good question. I am not young, but I am not done. I have a lot to offer. I took my time and looked at the challenge. I knew Southwire well and many of the current and past leadership team. That was a big factor. I saw momentum and wanted to lead and grow a business that would challenge me and be a great place at this point in my career.”
It was also very important for Ian that the company have a strong focus, specifically for Canada.
Ian noted, “Southwire cares about Canada. We want to grow here and are actively involved in R&D, which is exciting. There are constantly new markets and opportunities. At the end of the day, it is about growth. I want to see Southwire grow and be a part of leading that growth in Canada.”
Growth in Canada naturally led to a discussion around sustainability and how Southwire fits into the heavy focus on sustainability and what it means to the Southwire team. This is a discussion Canadian Electrical Wholesaler has had with many companies as we attempt to understand what sustainability will mean as we look forward and how each company sees this journey a little differently. Southwire is one of the few companies that understands there are innumerable levels of sustainability that focus on much more than just the environment, although that is a major part.
Ian noted that it is a difficult thing to truly define, but Southwire is focused on being a steward of sustainability that continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be sustainable. Southwire has many environmental initiatives and is committed to lowering its carbon footprint, while also recognizing that sustainability encompasses people as well as the environment. The company operates through its Giving Back Strands, which focus on Inclusion, Environment, Education, Community, and Customer partnerships. Southwire engages in a wide range of programs that foster diversity, support education and workforce development, protect natural resources, strengthen communities, and collaborate with customers and partners to make a lasting impact.
This was also a factor for Ian when considering Southwire, and he is truly passionate that “the company cares enough to invest in people, we care enough to invest in the communities we are in. All the Giving Back Southwire does is connected to our sustainability commitment as well. I just have not seen a company in the wire and cable industry before so devoted to giving back.”
Wrapping up the conversation, Ian discussed the valuable learning opportunities that Southwire presents to its staff, as well as the goal of getting out there alongside contractors to truly learn. While trade issues remain a concern, Ian’s experience and focus on relationships will help Southwire continue as an innovative leader and a steward of Canadian sustainability.
