UL Issues First Certification for Pole-Mounted Transformers

EIN 32 CS Ul Transformers 400

July 30, 2019

UL has issued the first certification for single- and three-phase pole-mounted transformers in North and Latin America. Demand is expected to grow for these types of units in urban, industrial and rural settings as the world population continues to increase. Additionally, more transformers are being installed on private land by the owners and not the utilities serving them.

Transformers are usually the domain of electrical utilities. But customer-installed pole-mounted transformers help expand the electrical network by strengthning weak spots in our overall low voltage grid, bringing power into areas where other types/designs of transformers are not suited for the topagraphy, as well as help manage the complexity of renewables intergration. The use of pole mounted transformers support vital infrastructure and enhances the quality of live in both rural and city locations such as hospitals, health care facilities, schools, recreational venues and provide power to street lights.

The units provide operational reliability and also have the advantage of lower initial cost, less maintenance, quick installation and they don not take up space on the ground. UL Certification Marks help enhance and demonstrate the safety of these products installed by utilities and other customers.

The UL Mark was issued on May 7, 2019 to Ecuatran S.A. for their pole-mounted transformer models Type M# and Type T# (followed by additional suffixes) based on the following standards:

  • IEEE C57.12.00, General Requirements for Liquid-Immersed Distribution, Power, and Regulating Transformers
  • IEEE C57.12.20, Overhead-Type Distribution Transformers 500 kVA and Smaller: High Voltage, 34,500 V and Below; Low Voltage, 7970/13,800Y V and Below
  • IEEE C57.12.31, Pole-Mounted Equipment – Enclosure Integrity
  • IEEE C57.12.90, Test Code for Liquid-Immersed Distribution, Power, and Regulating Transformers
  • CSA C2.2, Pole-Mounted, Single-Phase Distribution Transformers for Electric Utilities, and IEEE C57.12.90, Test Code for Liquid-Immersed Distribution, Power, and Regulating Transformers.
