The Canadian electrical industry has lost a respected member of our industry with the passing of Barry Marcus, long-time owner of Marcus Transformer, Montreal. For decades, Barry was a steady, gracious presence in our market, known not only for the quality of his products, but for the integrity and personal warmth he brought to every relationship.

Marcus Transformer traces its roots to 1942, when Barry’s father, Alvin Marcus, founded the company in Hillside, New Jersey to support the war effort with critical transformer production for munitions plants and military facilities. The business expanded steadily across the United States, Puerto Rico and into Canada, eventually opening Canadian manufacturing in Montreal’s Saint‑Henri neighbourhood in 1962 and building a reputation as a trusted name in dry‑type distribution and industrial control transformers.

Under Barry’s leadership, Marcus Transformer became firmly established in Canada, serving distributors, OEMs and end users with a range of dry‑type distribution, industrial control, autotransformers and line reactors, all proudly manufactured in Quebec. The company earned recognition for innovations in insulation systems, low‑noise magnetic cores and its WATT+ PLUS technology, designed to reduce losses, extend transformer life and deliver meaningful energy savings over the operating life of the equipment. Many customers discovered, often after decades of service, that the “grey box that’s always been there” on the wall was a Marcus transformer still performing reliably.

Those who worked with Barry remember a leader who took personal pride in having his family name on every product that left the plant. He understood that in a specialized segment like transformers, long‑term trust is built one installation at a time, through performance in the field and responsiveness when customers need support. Colleagues and customers alike experienced him as gracious and deeply committed to doing things the right way.

Barry also represented a generational story familiar to many in our industry: a family manufacturing business passed from founder to the next generation, adapting to new technologies while holding fast to core values of quality, service and accountability. Together with his son Benjamin, he continued to modernize the company, expand its reach across Canada and internationally, and embrace digital channels while maintaining close, personal relationships with distributors and partners.

As the Canadian electrical Industry reflects on Barry’s passing, we also recognize the enduring impact of his work. Thousands of Marcus transformers in commercial, industrial and institutional installations across North America quietly testify to a lifetime spent building reliable, efficient products that help power our facilities. For many of us, Barry will be remembered not only as a successful manufacturer, but as a gentleman of the industry whose integrity, warmth and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression.
