Dec 15 2015

Over 100 of the electrical industry’s best and brightest gathered together on December 8, 2015, at the St. Andrew’s Club & Conference Centre in Toronto for Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC)’s 2015 HR Awards of Excellence.

The 2015 HR Awards of Excellence winners are as follows:
• Emerging Leader Award — April Curry, PowerStream
• Leader of the Year Award — Don MacKinnon, President of the Power Workers’ Union
• Innovation in Human Resources Practices Award — Georgian College
• Diversity and Inclusion Award — Hydro One and Emera Newfoundland and Labrador

The event opened with remarks from Michelle Branigan, Chief Executive Officer of EHRC, and keynote presentations by Bob Delaney, MPP Mississauga-Streetsville, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, and Cathy Sprague, Executive Vice President, Human Resources with Bruce Power.

Delaney expressed optimism in the future of Ontario’s power industry and emphasized the importance of developing a highly skilled and professional workforce to meet the province’s current and future power needs. Sprague discussed a recent long-term agreement that Bruce Power and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) entered into that will result in 6,300 megawatts of power from the Bruce Power site, along with plenty of economic benefits including investments and jobs.
Overall, the speakers agreed that the future for the electrical industry looks bright and fruitful, underscoring the need to increase training initiatives to ensure the skilled talent required to meet Ontario’s power needs and environmental goals is ready and available.

After the keynote speeches, the winners of the 2015 HR Awards of Excellence were announced and presented with awards for recognition of their outstanding achievements throughout the year.

The EHRC is dedicated to strengthening the Canadian electrical industry to ensure that sufficient skilled workers are available to meet Canada’s future energy needs.
