CEW 15 CS home energy 400New technologies and approaches are altering the home energy management (HEM) market. Ideas from a decade ago when advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) projects drove much of the activity are now mature, such as home energy reports (HERs). Such approaches are not being completely replaced, but other technologies in front of and behind the meter have taken on greater importance. For example, smart thermostats and smart plugs have gained traction among residential customers and become key elements of a HEM strategy.

Additionally, there have been many advances in how data can be used for HEM solutions. Data analytics tools have improved, and more utilities and vendors are using these tools to support residential customers seeking deeper insights into how they might use energy more efficiently. New channels to engage with customers on HEM topics have emerged, such as voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home. This report notes the shift in emphasis to customer engagement by utilities that are using channels like mobile and social to provide relevant and timely information related to saving energy. Customer engagement has become a top strategic priority for utilities.

This Navigant Research report provides a comprehensive overview of the HEM market, its key players, and important technology trends. It also outlines HEM market drivers, which are substantial, and the main inhibitors keeping growth in check. In addition to profiles of key players, the report includes a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each firm. Navigant Research expects healthy growth for the HEM market. Worldwide revenue for HEM solutions is projected to nearly triple between 2019 and 2028.
