AD and IDI reps signing the merger agreement

AD, the member owned buying/marketing group, is merging with IDI Independent Distributors Inc. effective April 1, 2019. IDI brings 107 independent industrial Canadian distributors with over 364 locations into the AD family. AD also welcomes 21 new employees and a distribution centre located in Mississauga, Ontario as part of the transaction. Shown in photo: AD and IDI signing the merger agreement. This is AD’s ninth merger since the group’s founding and its fourth merger within Canada. AD completed mergers with Canadian electrical groups in 1993 and 2012, and a Canadian plumbing and heating group in 2016. AD Canadian members represent 20% of AD consolidated sales.

Coming on the heels of AD’s January 1, 2019 acquisition of the IDC-USA group, the IDI merger enhances the group’s private label and redistribution capabilities, reaffirms AD’s commitment to independent industrial distribution throughout North America, and reinforces the value of single industry groups coming together under the AD multi-industry umbrella.

Sometimes, I’m asked very specific questions I wish I could more accurately answer. For example, on the topic of social media, I’ve been asked, “What platforms are most distributors using? How often do they post on those platforms? How well is social media working for them? Which platforms are most effective?”

I share my general impressions, but I’d rather be able to share some hard data. I read. I research. And while it’s easy to find “big picture” research about social media, finding current information specific to electrical distribution is nearly (if not totally) impossible.

We often learn how to look forward by first looking back, or at the very least we realize that despite our best efforts we have not truly advanced quite so much as we had thought. Sure, technology is rapidly advancing. That’s beyond question. But what about our approach to selling it? Have we changed that much in the last 20, 40, 60 years? Inevitably there have been advances and changes in marketing, the Internet causing the biggest shift, but many of the concerns and directives that have driven the distribution and marketing of industrial electrical products remain, or at least planted the roots of the concerns of manufacturers and distributors today. 

To gain perspective of the perceptions and directions of electrical product distribution in 1960, we turn to Edwin H. Lewis. In 1960 Lewis published “The Distribution of Industrial Electrical Products” in the Journal of Marketing.

To fully define electrical product distribution in 1960, Lewis broke his study into several categories. We will follow his direction and provide his insights on the industry in each of the categories he identified.
