Canadian Electrical Wholesaler

Looking BackThe issue of Saturday closing in Ontario again surfaced, and members agreed to close Saturday mornings from May 21 to September 3 inclusive.

Power2FeedSince 2008, the Canadian Electrical Industry has been fighting hunger and feeding kids with Canadian Feed The Children (CFTC) through a campaign called Power2Feed. Thanks to generous supporters within the industry, Power2Feed has raised over $1.1 million in support of CFTC’s nutrition and food security programs and has helped feed tens of thousands of children living in poverty.

EconomyInvestment intensity is measured by the ratio of investment to gross domestic product. It captures the extent to which current resources are devoted to future production via investment in long-lived assets. It also reflects an economy's commitment to providing tangible long-lived assets to support production. Increases in the amount of capital per worker made available to workers via investment in these assets are the primary contributor to gains in labour productivity. Canada's investment intensity in non-residential structure assets was, on average, 80% higher than the U.S.'

Technical TrainingWhen factories outsource the sales function to reps, they do not abdicate responsibility in the field. Yes, the rep becomes the face of the factory in the territory. Yes, reps are the primary contact with the customer. And yes, the factory needs to provide technical training on their product to their reps.

InventoryNever get emotionally attached to your inventory. It will not love you back. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a client who has a significant dead stock challenge. Their challenge is to convert some of this non-productive asset into working capital. If this doesn’t happen, their financial partner will change the nature of the relationship. In other words, the bank threatened to pull their line of credit if things didn’t change. Hence, I got the phone call.

LED Lights Shower HeadLED tape lights, LED PAR and BR lamps, solar connectors, exit signs with adjustable LED lamp heads, these are all futuristic products. As we look back 10 years, we see many new products that have introduced new technology and sometimes new markets for electrical distributors. Solar and wind power generators were just a few. Today we anticipate energy-saving technologies over the coming decade, from increasingly green motors to sophisticated LEDs, ceramic metal-halide lamps, daylight harvesting lighting systems, and smart building technology.

Amazon SupplyAmazon Supply. Mention it to distributors and it’s either a harbinger of the future or a threat: it represents an opportunity to sell to an entity that resells products to others, or it’s an entity that is dismissed. To manufacturers it represents an unknown that they feel they need to engage with out of concern that if they don’t, their competitors will.

LED LIghts Save the WorldWe tend to think about the world through our own eyes. On a larger platform, our industry is only a small part of the long-term impact that new disruptive technologies have on the world at large. For instance, LEDs have had a profound effect on the lighting industry. The recent Nobel Physics Award was presented to three Japanese inventors for the creation of white LED light, demonstrating the large presence of this innovation — which our industry plays a small part in for the long-term impact of LEDs on the world around us.

Canadian Building PermitsThe total value of building permits issued by Canadian municipalities fell 27.3% to $6.7 billion in August, following three months of double-digit increases. The August decline resulted mainly from lower construction intentions for non-residential buildings in Quebec and residential buildings in Ontario.

Measuring SuccessInvestment dollars are hard to come by, and for marketers explaining the value of marketing can be difficult due to the multitude of initiatives (so which one “created” the need or generated the sale), the role of the salesperson, and the fact that the customer needed the item anyway. Typical marketing metrics relate to sales increases (or sales generated), number of customers who participated in the activity, or lead generation.

Rick McCartenWith an outstanding record turnout at this year’s EFC Conference in Quebec City, delegates were asked to attend a workshop on our supply chain.

Delegates voted on several issues that would help advance our industry towards digitalization, improved performance, ease of doing business, and improved data.

Why?

Why do we need a workshop for our industry? All of our research over the years to supply chains customers shows that brand loyalty is mixed — it’s almost 50/50 between the manufacturer and the distributor.

CybersecurityDuring a recent Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group meeting, representatives from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and International Society of Automation (ISA) outlined a new program to address the growing risk of unprotected and under-protected building control systems in the U.S. and abroad.

Building owners, users, and manufacturers of control systems continuously work to find practical ways to create safe and more secure environments.

IdeaIDEA plans to introduce an online learning management tool, the IDEA Learning Portal, to train customers on the new IDEA Connector, which will launch in late September. This portal will contain comprehensive training information and documentation on the IDEA Connector, a master data management (MDM) platform that enables distributors to securely access accurate and timely product and pricing data directly from manufacturers.

To complement the portal, there will be four training session devoted to manufacturers and distributors at eBiz. These training sessions will dive deeper into specific content to ensure a complete understanding of important functionality.

Automation LabourforceBy: Thomas Donato, Rockwell Automation

We all are consumers. We all have expectations of quality and service.

When I talk to our customers, I do so with that experience and mindset. If we don’t deliver – we lose. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. It’s as simple as that.

I just lived through a great example of this. Every morning I use our blender. One of the parts broke, and the manufacturer made it quite difficult and cumbersome to get a replacement.

OmnicableOmniCable was founded in 1977 by partners with deep experience in the US electrical marketplace. With their clear understanding of the industry, they were able to identify an opportunity for the founding of a unique company. At the time, there was a disconnect between electrical distributors and electrical wire and cable manufacturers due to a growing demand that needed to be fulfilled under strict timelines.

The nature of the industry required a wide range of product types and configurations on a “just-in-time” basis. As a result, distributors were unable to stock enough cable products to meet the demands of their customers.
