Canadian Electrical Wholesaler

Canadian Grey MarketAmazon Supply is going to help grow the Canadian gray market, writes Paul Eitmant, but as long as your customer relationships are strong, you’ll be fine. I remember the first time I was confronted with the gray market in Canada...

Amazon Supply ThreatTalk of slaughter at the hands of Amazon Supply may be a bit premature. David Gordon takes a hard look at the big newcomer, what it means for the industry and whether it points to bigger changes on the horizon. Over the past couple of months the electrical industry has been talking more and more about Amazon Supply as a threat to an industry...

Internet SalesThe Electrical Council introduces a new report on Internet Purchasing & Research Trends among Canadian Electrical Customers. I am really proud of the Electrical Council’s latest research project, “Click and Order.” We took a huge chance by not hiring an expensive consultant; instead, we formed a committee of members to conduct the research and to develop the report. The research committee worked together to develop appropriate survey questions, distributed the survey to Kerrwil’s end-customer list, and closely analyzed the survey responses.

Forces of ChangeI recently attended a seminar that featured a presentation by a successful distributor in the container and packaging business. The presenter was Andrew Berlin of Berlin Packaging out of Chicago. Berlin’s presentation turned distribution inside out and offered a unique way to run wholesale distribution.

Marketing Over the past few weeks I’ve tried to identify where and when rebates started in the electrical industry. After numerous conversations with current/retired management, I have determined that the first rebate program in our industry came out of the plumbing channel of distribution. At the same time, I could not determine which manufacturer actually started this process.

Looking BackMost wholesalers remained closed on Saturdays throughout the summer, but Central District board members voted to open again on Saturdays in the fall. The Board agreed that distributors should be closed on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Monday. However, even this motion didn’t pass unanimously.

Economy GDPReal gross domestic product (GDP) by industry increased in all provinces and territories in 2013 except New Brunswick, where it remained unchanged. Nationally, real GDP by industry expanded 2.0% in 2013 after increasing 1.8% in 2012.

Building PermitsContractors took out $6 billion worth of building permits in March, down 3% from February. The March decline followed an 11.3% decrease the previous month. Lower construction intentions in the non-residential sector in six provinces, led by Ontario, more than offset a gain in the residential sector.

EmployeeOver the next 10 years, there will be a change of the guards. Even if it’s trendy with baby-boomers to say, “I will never retire” or “Those who retire die sooner,” our parents’ generation will be forced out by a new and younger generation. A good mix of X and Y generation will slowly take the big earnings positions in many companies.

EFC kicked off 2021 with an outstanding webinar featuring Janice Gross Stein, renowned Canadian political scientist, founder of the Munk School of Global Affairs and recipient of the Order of Canada. Ms. Stein has spoken at previous EFC conferences, earning many accolades, and this session was no different as we learned what to look for as the Biden Administration takes hold of the White House.

Our close economic ties to the U.S. means that Canadians must “keep up with the Administrations” to survive. Janice focused her discussions on industrial policy and climate change within an active intervening government.

Digital IntensityAdoption of digital technologies by Canadian industries is associated with higher labour productivity growth and greater resilience to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2002 to 2019, labour productivity grew 22.1% in digitally intensive sectors — more than three times higher than in non-digitally intensive sectors.

Over the past two decades, Canada has embraced digital technologies at an unprecedented pace and breadth as businesses and individuals have relied increasingly on digital products and services.

Canadian Business Counts - December 2020The COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter the business landscape. As a result, the number of active businesses in October edged up 0.6%. Despite the slight increase, the number of active businesses was down 6.7% from February 2020.*

Gene Biben, formerly President and CEO of Biben Sales, joined Channel Marketing Group earlier this month. Gene’s avowed desire is to “give back” to the industry, to help people work together. He will help reps achieve their goals and manufacturers optimize their performance, and relationship, to and with manufacturer reps. He’ll additionally support Channel Marketing Group clients’ research needs.

While Gene is well known by many manufacturers, we thought it would be interesting to ask him to consider changes he has seen over the years.

Darci SpiteriBy Darci Spiteri

This past month marked one year since stepping onto a job site and starting my electrical apprenticeship. Little did I know 2020 would throw in some curveballs, but it was a pretty fantastic year for self-development when I sit back and reflect.

Enter Pandemic, worldwide lockdowns, and my Jobsite shutting down for a month. Losing hours was a downside and with my apprenticeship being based on the number of hours worked, moving onto my second year will take a little extra time.

David NathanielBy Line Goyette

Six years ago in February 2015, I interviewed David Nathaniel and called the profile I wrote “A Talent for Being There at the Right Time.” We met again this past February, this time virtually (without a cup of his wonderful expresso coffee). What follows is a summary of our conversation — “A Talent for Still Being There at the Right Time — Part 2.”

My first question to David was, what has happened in those six years? “Everything,” he said, and he started to laugh. “Obviously, we faced a lot of disruption from LED technology.

“It was quite surprising,” said Stephanie Smith of being named EHRC’s Leader of the Year. “Leadership in 2020 has certainly been a challenge for everybody in the world let alone the nuclear industry or the electricity industry.”

An engineer by trade, Smith spent the majority of her career with Ontario Power Generation (OPG). She was the first woman to be certified by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station where she served as Plant Manager and was recently named the first President and CEO of CANDU Owners Group. Smith is also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion.
