Three years ago, Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) established the Young Professionals Network with the goals of giving young individuals in the industry a place to share ideas and learn, get to know their peers, and give back to the community. As National Chair of the network, I am proud to say that we now have more than 500 members across Canada and are continuing to grow every day. The wealth of knowledge and passion these young individuals have is contagious and we wanted to be able to showcase this for all to see.

With that said, I am delighted to be part of the editorial campaign that CEW Managing Editor Line Goyette talks about in her editorial comment. We hope this project will become a permanent feature. An ongoing series of articles written by and about young contractors and professionals will give the floor to young contractors and professionals from the industry, to share their expertise and experiences in their fields of practice, to recognize their value, and to help us to create lifelong relationships with up and coming industry leaders. 

I invite you and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and participate in this exciting project. In any segment of the industry, in any function of a company, if you have something to share with your industry peers, this is your opportunity — all contributions are welcome. 

Articles can range in length from 450-800 words, but cannot be marketing pitches for the individuals’ organizations. Brief bios and a link to their company’s website will accompany the article. The articles will not be censored in terms of their content, but the editors of the Kerrwil Electrical Group will ensure that the texts respond to readers’ needs and the publication’s style and tone. The authors will solely be responsible for the content of their articles.

The U.S. Department of Energy has released the results of a study examining authentication vulnerabilities in connected lighting systems (CLS). Particularly as emerging CLS incorporate distributed intelligence, network interfaces and sensors, they can serve as data-collection platforms that enable a wide range of valuable new capabilities as well as greater energy savings in buildings and cities. However, CLS technology is currently at an early stage of development, and its increased connectivity introduces cybersecurity risks that are new to the lighting industry and must be addressed for successful integration with other systems.

COVID-19 has heightened the benefit of, and interest in, eCommerce for electrical distributors. Our second and third COVID-19 Electrical Market Sentiment Reports have shown that those with an eCommerce offering have seen online sales increases. Further, from conversations with distributors, their site activity increased. The benefit is that these companies had lower sales declines (and some increases), and were able to better serve their customers.

A further benefit is that their remote workforce had access to an online resource, other than manufacturers, for quick, easy, product research.

2020 q2 Pulse of Lighting FindingsChannel Marketing Group’s 2020 Q2 Pulse of Lighting Report projects that the lighting market, through electrical distribution, contracted by 20%.

The survey, conducted the third week in June, received responses from 164 individuals who equally represented industry stakeholders.

Distributor Performance
Very few distributors reported either flat or positive performance with over 30% reporting declines of over 30% for the quarter.
